Bradd Marquis: The Gift of Music (free download)

THE GIFT OF MUSIC:
Happy Holidays
from
BRADD MARQUIS

Bradd Marquis is quickly becoming a name that continues to be repeated when quality male vocalists are mentioned these days. This young crooner oozes with soul, though his versatility enables him to bring the essence of music, pure and simple to any stage he graces. Often compared to Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergrass, the raspy-vocalist with a statuesque physique and model-like good looks has a personality that resonates with down home charm. Hailing from a family where music knew no limit, Bradd Marquis is a force to be reckoned with!

He was invited by the mighty SoulBounce team to be part of the Men Love Mary: A Tribute to 'My Life' project and submitted his rendition of 'Never Want to Live Without You' -- critics, and fans alike gave him thumbs up.

As a treat to you for the holidays, Bradd Marquis is offering an EP filled with grown and sexy tunes for all to enjoy, which also includes 'Never Want to Live Without You' == another name to remember: BRADD MARQUIS, a gifted musician, actor and well-rounded talent!

SoulBounce Presents: Men Love Mary - Tribute to 'My Life'

Fifteen years ago Mary J. Blige released My Life, a breakthrough album chronicling her inner struggles while catapulting her to superstardom as the Queen of Hip Hop Soul. In celebration of this milestone, we gathered nine dynamic male artists to record re-imaginings of their favorite My Life songs for Men Love Mary: A Tribute to My Life, a digital EP presented by SoulBounce. The EP is hosted by one of Bad Boy's legendary "Hitmen," Chucky Thompson, who was a key producer on the My Life album. My Life was a pivotal point in Mary's career where her voice shined as a beacon of hope and understanding to men and women all over the world. Men Love Mary: A Tribute to My Life offers a fresh perspective from Eric Roberson, Jesse Boykins III, Slakah the Beatchild, Nino Moschella, Bradd Marquis, TL Cross, Darien, D Maurice, Fave and Siik--a new generation of artists inspired by her sincerity, longevity and artistry. My Life was about Mary's relationship with one man, and now many men have reinterpreted these songs in an effort to pay tribute to an artist who has given us so much of herself. As a culture, we do a great job of paying tribute to our stars posthumously. Men Love Mary: A Tribute to My Life is an opportunity to celebrate our Queen and let her know how much she means to us and to music. This is our chance to honor her and give her flowers while she's still here, and we're sharing the bouquet with her adoring fans. SoulBounce is proud to present to you this labor of love, Men Love Mary: A Tribute to My Life. Download (link) the EP and enjoy these new renditions of some of your favorites from My Life.

Bradd Marquis is BOUNCE worthy & Certifiable!

You will only hear me praise artists who music I truly support and BRADD MARQUIS is one such, soul singer. Bradd has been compared to such greats as Teddy Pendergass, the late greats Marvin Gaye and Donny Hathaway. In 2007 he was named Soul Singer of the Year on BET's 106 and Park show. In addition to Bradd's vocal chops, he is a talented actor and certainly has model good looks -- height, stature and that handsome appeal that makes women swoon. He's also a genuinely sweet, thoughtful and well-mannered gentleman.

Bradd is a pleasure to work with! It fills me with pride when I introduce his music to someone new and they immediately embrace his sound. I was overjoyed when I was informed that Bradd was going to be featured on Soul Bounce and certified as
BOUNCE WORTHY! (Please click the Bounce Worthy link above for the Soul Bounce tribute) I featured Bradd on my SoulMusiqLuva podcast today (check it out)

Bradd performed Donny Hathaway's 'Song For You' on Showtime At The Apollo -- judge for yourself and determine if Donny would have been proud of his effort.

Earlier this year, we (ONUTSS) hosted a tribute to Luther Vandross on what would have been his 58th birthday at the legendary Blue Note in New York City. We were fortunate to have had Bradd as one of the featured performers. The video below is a clip of some of the songs he performed at the show.

For more information about Bradd, please visit his myspace page. And if you are interested in having Bradd perform in your town or venue/event, please contact yours truly!

Remembering Mr. Magic: A True School Pioneer

Remembering a New York legend who went on to become a global hero!
John Rivas aka Mr. Magic aka Sir Juice
Transition Date: October 2, 2009

As per NY Daily News

Rap legends from Biggie Smalls to Tupac Shakur lionized him in their verse. And now, like them, he's gone.

DJ Mr. Magic, one of hip hop's conduits to radio, died Friday of a heart attack.

Born John Rivas, he launched and hosted the first all-rap radio show in the U.S.

Titled "Rap Attack," the show debuted in 1983 on WBLS and quickly became an inspiration point for key players in hip hop. The show, which lasted six years, also featured deejay Marley Marl and Tyron (Fly Ty) Williams.

At his peak, in the mid- to late '80s, Magic had a rivalry with Kool DJ Red Alert, who had his own show on WRKS. They each had their own rap groups. Magic's Juice Crew featured such key names as Biz Markie, Roxanne Shante, Kool G. Rap and Masta Ace.

In 1992, Nas immortalized Mr. Magic in "Halftime" while Biggie name-checked him in a track called "Juicy." Tupac also mentioned the record spinner on his 1995 cut "Old School."

* * *

My personal memories --
* trying to find the best spot in my bedroom to get good reception when he was on the air on WHBI -- had to get my cassette ready for the ride the following morning to (junior high) school

* laying in bed, well after I should have been asleep (school the next morning) and hearing my mother get up during the night -- praying that she wouldn't come in my bedroom and bust me for listening to the radio

* seeing people like LL, TJ Swann and Biz Markie around town and being so star struck because Mr. Magic played their music

Courtesy of DJ OhSoKool's tweets -- these are some of the phrases that became standard when you listened to Mr. Magic on the air:

* "Oh my god I think I'm having a Rap Attack!!"

*
"Any man can learn from his or her mistakes, but it takes a wise guy or gal to learn from the mistakes made by others"

*
"Be yourself, or you might find yourself - by yourself - and that's no fun"

*
"Persistence overcomes resistance"

WBLS here in NY had an on-air tribute to Mr. Magic on the day he died. Marley Marl was mixing some classic hotness, hip hop pioneers called in: Big Daddy Kane, MC Shan, Doctor Ice, Jay-Z and Sal from Disco Fever (<~~ wow) to share their 'magic moments' If you missed the tribute... here's a link

Certifiable Music For Your Soul #1

I revealed recently that I have put my pen down as an official reviewer of new music cds. What I have come to realize is that my words are solely my opinion, and as selective as I am about music -- it's best for me to support the music that moves me. Having said that -- and knowing that I definitely need to get back on the ball to making this blog come to life -- I'm going to begin with the first post in a long series of Certifiable Music For Your Soul! Although it truly refers to the music that moves 'my' soul -- I want to let you in on my secret audible pleasures. I don't know how often I'll post in this category because music that grooves me doesn't come in any specific frequency. Sit tight and ride with me. As always, I appreciate you taking the time to read my thoughts.

Calvin really did his thing on this project

(2)
J. Moss - Just James

JMoss is on Twitter and from the tweets that are being posted, besides me -- people are really feeling this new album. Already, there are a couple of cuts on this album that really stand out for me -- but nothing has moved me like "Anointing" has in quite some time.

V: It Is Finished! The Paradox: Vol I

Although I am his Publicist, I am and have been a 'fan' first of his music. That is what brought us together. This album has evoked for those who've listened to it, many different feelings. For me, it is a complete album from start to finish.

This album is now available for purchase on Amazon and iTunes.
No library for a music lover of today's indie soul is complete without it!

Rounding out this edition are songs sprinkled here and there:

Eric Roberson & Lalah Hathaway: Dealing
Eric Roberson: Newness

Ledisi: Turn Me Loose
Say No
Goin' thru Changes

Remember to: support INDIE SOUL music makers by purchasing the music you enjoy. Not sure who's doing what?

Well, here's a gift for you from Vikter Duplaix ~ Electric Love (free download)

Your legacy

What will your legacy be when your time here on Earth has run out? Have you given any thought to what remnants of you people will hold onto? It's funny, this topic came to mind as I spoke with a few people I know in reference to someone we know who has passed on.

What was really crazy is that when we discussed this particular individual, we all had this instantaneous look come across our faces that distinctly said, "Yeah, oh well!" with little regard. I listened to their stories about this person before chiming in to share the eventful introduction I'd had. The impression left behind of this person was to the far corner of favorable. The bottom line is that we were all in agreement that none of us would be making any serious effort to attend the homegoing service for this individual.

Let me explain, my memory of this person involves me being referred to as 'one of those bitches!' I was so caught off guard that it took a minute for me to realize that the vile words spilling out of that person's mouth was a very weak attempt at humor and were directed at me. As I write this, I am trying to be careful so as not to indicate when the person passed, what the individual's sex was or where I might know the person from because people have a tendency to read between the lines and make ill-fated assumptions. I'm not here to throw dirt on someone who can no longer defend him or herself. I am merely here to enlighten you of the lasting impression you have the ability to implant in the mind of others.

Are you boisterous, obnoxious, brazen, one who people move away from instead of draw to? (Qualities of the departed)

My family and closest friends can co-sign as I share characteristics of my own personality, good and bad. I'm loveable yet moody, perhaps the scales of my inner Libra are sometimes off-kilter *shrugging* -- I am thoughtful and considerate yet withdrawn and often a loner. God is the head of my life, yet I often pray for patience because I bore of people and circumstances very easily when the interest is depleted. I can be brutally honest and overly sensitive! *shrugging yet again*

The most important thing I want everyone to know about me is that I love my son very much -- and I couldn't make it through this life without my music.

Blessings

So I'm marinating on some things...

Time for some of my randomness to come full circle and be placed on front street! Taking the focus from the norm of my music posts. Before I begin, I am a Baptist -- I love no one deeper than I love God. I'm not always as faithful a servant to God's word as I should be. The human in me falters on a daily basis. I don't throw stones at those whose beliefs are far to the left of my own. If you believe that there is a higher calling on our lives than is way more than we can control, we can be cool.

So I'm sailing on a high right now. My very intelligent son, who skipped a grade early in his elementary years recently completed high school and was acknowledged in church today. He received a scholarship and was crowned the 2009 King of the Second Baptist Church Scholarship Committee based on the funds that were raised in his honor. His counterpart, The Queen is also a 16-year old scholar! So, our future leaders have been set on a path to greatness and I can speak for me -- I expect no shortcomings from this one here!

On another note -- I was a bit agitated around 4:30 this morning. My neighbors, who really do not know the meaning of hospitality and courtesy for those living beneath them returned home from an apparent family outing. I had to hear them walk up the stairs, put the children to bed, flush the toilet a few times -- and then the ultimate atrocity -- the creaking and squeaking of the bed! I didn't have the energy to get out of bed for my iPod -- which I typically keep near me because their three small children rise routinely at 7:30 EVERY morning! So, at this point I'm wide awake and watching the clock (just wrong, right?! >) Ten minutes passed and there was silence. Okay, some quiet and I started to drift back into slumber and before you know it the bed post was hitting the wall. Enrique had gone IN!

Now, my mind is wandering. What were they doing in the context of the silent moments? Who was doing whom? (Oh Lord, was I 'not' in church -- seeking salvation a few short hours ago?!) Then I got annoyed -- but, honestly I was annoyed because Alex was getting hers and I wasn't! Look here! God knows my heart better than I'm sure I do. HE knows that I'm tired of being by my lonesome and that I long for companionship. I've already cracked the seal of living as I move into my fourth decade.

I thank my Pastor for praying for the single women in the congregation today -- those of us who don't want to repeat the cycles that our mothers, aunties, grandmothers endured. Hell, my mother's praying for both, me and my sister in that regard.

Just some things I was tripping over today.

Pray for me ya'll :)

The Paradox: Vol I

R&B vocalist, Valvin “V” Roane II returns with It Is Finished: The Paradox Vol I, the follow up album that many have anxiously awaited.

A few years back, an album entitled The Revelation Is Now Televised quietly made waves in and around key independent soul music circles. The internet buzzed about this album that consisted of conscious lyrics, booming bass lines, romantic ballads and soulful melodies. However, little was known about the man behind this rousing collection of songs whose musical career has garnered work with the likes of DJ Jazzy Jeff, Justin Timberlake and Musiq Soulchild to name a few. Valvin Roane II aka “V” hailing from the state of New Jersey, with seemingly no publicity for his debut album, had begun to awaken the musical senses in many who were eager for aural stimulation.

Touring extensively with Jill Scott as a backing vocalist for several years, V somehow managed to find the time to work on a follow up album. On March 17, 2009 music lovers around the globe were elated to learn that the long awaited project, It Is Finished: The Paradox Vol I became available for consumption via digital download. This treasure chest is filled with nineteen self-produced gems, laden with songs ranging from easy going club bangers to those focusing on more serious issues involving relationships, as well as the socially conscious and spiritually driven that provide a well-rounded picture of V, the artist.

The first single to be released from the new album, Rules Of The Game glides in over a sleek beat that draws you in and coats you with the truth serum needed when faced with life’s most hardcore lessons. On The After Party, V sings of what may occur when the show is over, the night is quiet and there is an unexpected knock at the door with a salacious invitation to an all-out rendezvous. The song has an infectious melody that is guaranteed to light up dance floors around the world. In a plea for world peace, love and unity as Marvin Gaye once attempted, What’s Still Going On speaks to the ills in our society today related to issues such as poverty, unemployment, war and distress. It Is Finished: The Paradox Vol I is V’s effort to distill his personal experiences in life into melody and words as he makes a universal impact.

Holding Back the Tears

Woo woo woo!

Not a hint of sadness here, whatsoever! I'm reflecting on God's blessings in my life. The desires of my heart seem to be coming to me ever so steady with each passing day. I have come to realize that joy will not simply drop at my feet ~ I have to seek it out, make some noise and let people know that I am just so serious about what I want to do and what I am capable of devoting myself to doing. In the past I have blogged about:
  • Rahsaan Patterson
  • Pamela Nichols
  • and a young dude who calls himself "V"

Pam -- I will speak of her every opportunity that I am able to because she has been a tremendous joy i
n a short period of time. She's a visionary who is still getting her feet wet when it comes to the inner workings of the music biz. I laugh to myself sometimes because even her bark is absolutely opposite of mine. She's sweet as the 'suga' that she refers to in her nickname (Sista Suga).

Rahsaan -- his music is like butter! I really need not say any more than that but I will. His music moved me after the first time I'd listened and the mission began! I was out to find a song, an album, a cassingle...that's for those of us who remember the forms music were presented in after the decline of vinyl. I reached out to his manager at the time, Lucille Hunt which was one of the boldest and wisest moves ever made by this here chic. She embraced my interest and desire to help spread the word about Rahsaan Patterson's music and the rest is history. Pam and I became friends via a message board of Rahsaan Patterson die-hard fans that I put together and a short while later ONUTSS was born.

People seem
to always want to know what the hell went into developing a name like ONUTSS -- another blog -- another day -- but it was a lonely late late night notion that hit me hard. And in less than three years, Pam and I have poured our hearts into what we do. There have been many a day that I've told her vehemently that I wanted out! It's hard watching others make $$ off of your passion when you have a vision to do something grand for those you support and you're lacking $$. It's also an interpretation of a very painful and saddening slap, in my opinion when people silently refuse to join forces, for the sake of a bigger movement.

The Luther Vandross Tribute Story
One night I received a call from this brother, Kenny Wesley. I have always admired Kenny because when you call his cell phone, his voicemail picks up and he begins to speak what we have adopted as proper English. He then breaks into the most perfect Spanish interpretation of what was stated in English and then he breaks into another language that I have yet to identify. (lol) In addition to that, he's a really nice guy who can sing his 'face' off and is severely underrated. Kenny called me that night because somewhere in the depths of his musical soul, he had the idea of doing an ONUTSS Listening Party in honor of Luther Vandross. As he began to share more of his vision, I had my own pictures of who all I wanted to reach out to for the sake of participating and making it the best event ONUTSS could imagine.

Kenny said that he had already spoken with Gordon Chambers about participating and he, too was on board. Well, if you have Kenny and Gordon, then... That's where V might come in.

I have been in
V's corner since hearing his album, "The Revelation is Now Televised" a few years back and have told him so many times via Myspace messages. But, I didn't expect to work with him so soon and on such a level as what unfolded earlier this week. When he agreed to consider being part of the lineup, I hung up the phone and let out a squeal. Our Luther Vandross Tribute singers were nearly complete and I was more than pleased.
V: A vision in motion

Actually, before reaching out to V, I called on a friend who I thought would be a perfect addition to the growing lineup. That friend, Mike Hammond loved the idea and had songs in mind to perform before the conversation ended. It was all so perfect, in my mind. An extravaganza of this sort was a risky venture for ONUTSS because we did not want anyone whom we had worked with previously to feel slighted because they were not asked to participate. We also had not done an all-out show in the years that ONUTSS has existed. There was so much we would need to pull together, in a short period of time to make it all so right. Securing the venue was most important and what better place to present a showcase dedicated to one of soul music's greatest and most beloved crooners than the world famous Blue Note in New York City! Then, bringing in key players for the band -- and the necessity of background vocalists -- and the little details.

I have to say, Pam and I put our best hustle hats on and made sure it was all taken care of. Our band consisted of Kelvyn Bell (guitar/Music Director), Kim Davis (bass), Alex Marcelo (keys) and Daru Jones (drums). Each musician has a special story and credentials that stretch far and wide. If I took you through their collective list, your eyes would pop as the names of singers and musicians, as well as previous project involvement they've had were to become known to you. Simply marvelous! Our background singers, Tess and Ki Ki Hawkins were absolutely stellar. They were a perfect compliment, not only to one another but to each singer. We also realized that we needed a host(ess) with the ability to charm the crowd and hold their interest between singers. Who else but Lorenda Robinson would be perfect for the task. She told us that she was honored to be asked and would do the damned thing. That she did and so much more!

As we moved closer and closer to the date, things seemed to fall into place. The rehearsals were scheduled. The event was listed on The Blue Note's calendar and the unbelievable was unfolding into the realistic. Unexpectedly, we got a call that Mike Hammond unfortunately needed to cancel. We wished him well and needed to decide quickly if he should be replaced or whether we should fill his slot or not. Filled, it was! I called on Bradd Marquis who had been a featured performer at our ONUTSS Listening Party and he agreed immediately to be on the bill. There it was -- done!

* * *

So it was ... Monday, April 20, 2009 ... a very rainy and cold day in New York where the weather made not a bit of difference to the packed house at The Blue Note. People came out for a show honoring a legend and left with names they had not known before, right at the forefront of their thoughts.

The night began with the band playing a funky rendition of Luther's Til My Baby Comes Home featuring Kelvyn Bell. Heads in the crowd were nodding, fingers tapping and I'm sure feet stomping too. Hot!

Lorenda Robinson stepped on stage and set the tone by introducing One Nation Under The Soul Shack like we'd never heard ourselves described previously. It was so touching that I found myself wiping my eyes. Damn her! I'd bet Pam that she was going to be the first to break down and here I was on the verge of an outright babbling sob. (smile) But it was dark where I sat and very few seemed to notice the waterworks. (whew!)

Kenny Wesley came out and sang Luther's song, "Any Love" in such a way that was similar to the original but certainly with his own impression. Kenny is unassuming until he opens his mouth to belt out some sounds that definitely make you want to stand up and scream out, "You'd better sing, sugar!" He then went to the piano and played for himself as he sang, "Time" a song that Billy Porter put his stamp on, but Kenny Wesley put his foot in twice!

Bradd Marquis was next to hit the stage and hit it, he did! Bradd is a handsome drink of water, so I watched closely as the ladies near the stage gave one another 'that' umm hmm glance. He certainly didn't disappoint either. His two Luther covers,
Never Too Much and So Amazing would have pleased Luther. The crowd rocker for sure was Bradd's original song, "Radio" ~ a feel good tune that you can't help but bounce to. The hook draws you in before you even realize what has happened. Bradd's smoky raspiness has brought comparisons of Teddy Pendergrass, Jaheim and Marvin Gaye. What wonders lie ahead for him and the other singers is all in God's control.

Kenny Wesley returned to the stage after being summoned by our hostess, Ms. Robinson who kept the crowd laughing and thoroughly entertained between performers. They then engaged in musical love before all hungry eyes. The sultry ballad, If This World Were Mine that Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn made a staple for all of us romantic-types had come to life. In Lorenda and Kenny, I saw Donny and Roberta, Ashford and Simpson, Marvin and Tammi, Rick and Teena and any other fabulous male/female duo who possessed the ability to join genetic forces, blend souls and deliver a heartfelt performance dripping with sensuality!
I loved the show, as a music fan first and then, pridefully as a co-producer and promoter. I couldn't help but reach out to Pam and share a smile. This is what we had brought together. The Blue Note was packed -- you know how they somehow manage to put twenty people in a space that should rightfully hold about five -- there were faces I'd never seen, faces I didn't expect to see and even more faces of people whom I
love (my mom, my sister, my friends). I turned to take it all in as Lorenda introduced V. He stepped on stage and this is when the show turned into a personal concert for me. Having listened to his music for so long, witnessing the live performance -- even after two rehearsals -- was special. I zoned out as he sang If Only For One Night. I remember clapping when the song ended but my mind was so far away from what my eyes were taking in. I thought back to how scary it was for me to send him a note on Myspace in which I'd shared how much I loved his cd, or the time I was brazen enough to ask him to be part of an ONUTSS listening party. Let me say, there was little room for disappointment as he sang one of my very favorite songs that Luther blessed the world with, Make Me A Believer. V's song ,This Moment from his recently released sophomore album, The Paradox has quickly become a song that touches me to the core. He sang that and I was filled...period! Tess and Ki Ki's backing vocals were just sheer perfection.

The final performer for this magnificent evening was Gordon Chambers, who becomes a vibrant character on stage. His stage presence brings from within all of the charm, personality and vigor that he possesses. His interaction with the crowd exemplified the professional entertainer he truly is. His Luther song
choices included Creepin', Superstar and a personal dedication to the departed crooner, I'll Miss You Most. Gordon took the audience through a range of emotions and vocal acrobatics. From encouraging the crowd to celebrate the life of a talent gone all too soon on what was to have been his 58th birthday, to having them participate in the songs to applauding his parents who were in the crowd for a lengthy union, Gordon Chambers was sheer perfection as he brought this incredible showcase to a close.

No Luther Vandross tribute show could have ever been complete without a rousing rendition of The Power of Love/Love Power. Gordon called all of the evening's performers, even the hostess Lorenda back to the stage and they rocked out as Luther would have had it!

Random Thoughts

I should be in bed, typical. I have so much to take care of but there are not enough hours in any day. I am charged over what I experienced in this past weekend. I added a new post to my project, The Musiq Spotlight Blog: SoulUK.

I put this blog together in hopes of it being a resource for independent musicians and for people looking for opportunities to network with the movers and shakers who make things happen behind-the-scene in our INDIE SOUL world. There are talented, skilled and enterprising individuals and companies listed in The Musiq Spotlight Blog.

***
This past weekend in New York, the annual Indie Soul Mixer took place up in Harlem. This is year number four and the gathering has grown to such a level that the organizers, Dexter Myers and Mike Ashley know that the venue which has hosted the Mixer for its years of existence, Billie's Black can no longer hold the crowd. People were wall-to-wall, even more so this year than any other year I can recall...this is year #3 for me.

The evening opened with some enlightening commentary from Marko Noble of RhythmandSoulRadio.com, Kevin Harewood of EDclectic Entertainment, Terry Bello of the International Soul Music Summit and Drake Phifer of Urban Organic Entertainment.

This event has literally become 'the' networking event for any independent soul artist who is either in the New York area or able to come to New York to exchange cds, pass out business cards, rock the mic and show people what you're working with and to gain some knowledge from a few pioneers who graciously gather to mix and mingle. There were way too many artists in the house for me to remember, but those I recall: Nikki Wade, Rogier, Teisha Marie, Kev.O, Terrence Darnell, Lenora Jay, Kenny Wesley, Mika, Abby Dobson, Kendra Ross, LaSonya Gunther, Steve Wallace, Tomas Doncker, Veronica Dawkins, Green Tea, Jeff Hendricks, Mahasin, Anthony Dixon, Tom Paul, Drea, Jimmy Salvameni, Paul Rivers Bailey, Kimberly Nichole, Ashanti, Johnny Kemp and others whose names I didn't catch or hadn't been told. There were some who blessed the mic and made you really open a wide eye and take note, there were others who got on the mic and should have opted to stay in the audience to spectate -- there were a few who went well over their allotted one song and there were even more who didn't step to the mic.

Here are a few pictures

~ ~ ~ Thrilled ~ ~ ~

Sometimes you reflect on where you are in life and you wish for more. Sometimes you think back on the path you've taken and become overwhelmed. This year is off to a great start for my side~gig, ONUTSS. We've got some really exciting events coming up and other ventures in the works -- I wanted to share the following with whomever is out in the blogosphere (Fiona turned me on to that word :) and might be reading my words:

Ashanti Munir and Paula Ralph-Birkett are two very special ladies. We have the distinct honor of announcing that they will be our featured performers for our Women's History Month celebration. What better way than to celebrate the strength of a woman than with two beautiful feminine gems who have fabulous voices?!

Listen to these ladies sing:

Please save the date and plan to join us for an evening of good music, good vibes and a guarantee of great memories!

It is no secret to anyone who loves music that Luther Vandross was a gift sent to us from God. He's one who we still find great difficulty in knowing that nearly four years have passed since he left us, in the physical sense. For our utter enjoyment, we have a treasure chest of music that Luther created for us all to enjoy with the point of a finger.

It is with all the pride that we can muster that we announce that ONUTSS is honoring the memory of Luther Vandross on April 20, 2009 at NY's legendary Blue Note. It's important to point out that Luther would have celebrated his 58th birthday on that same day. We truly believe that this tribute in song will be blessed by Luther's spirit -- which will be with us in the building that evening.

We will be featuring an unbelievable ensemble of male vocalists: GORDON CHAMBERS, KENNY WESLEY, V and MIKE HAMMOND, along with a backing band of incredible musicians -- headed by our Music Director/Guitarist (Kelvyn Bell), Funktified Drummer (Daru Jones) and Bodacious Bassman (Kim Davis), with more to come. Our hostess for the evening will be the vivacious, Lorenda Robinson of Brown Baby Girl fame. These musicians have worked with the best of the best -- from Najee, Kashif, Sybil, Talib Kweli, ?Love of the Roots and so many more noteworthy talents -- it's just ridiculous!

There will be two shows (8pm and 10:30pm) and reservations are STRONGLY recommended. For more information and singer bios please visit The Blue Note's website.

The Musiq Spotlight

I'm always interested in finding new ways to bridge the communication divide by introducing music makers to so many people who I know that have the power to move mountains on their behalf. (a large charge, huh?! I have big dreams)

In addition to being a native of New York, an intense music lover and the co-founder of a company called One Nation Under The Soul Shack which is better known to most as “ONUTSS” ~ I enjoy shining “The Spotlight” on individuals who may not be known to others. I launched another blog spot, The Musiq Spotlight which is intended to do just that — turn the mic over to people who work hard behind-the-scenes and might not receive their just due.

As a part of the ONUTSS team, I am often asked by others who they should connect to within the indie soul circle. The aim is to introduce you to people who may only be names to you, show you just why you need to know them and create a path for those bonds to be formed.

I will continue to blog here at my "Inner Soul" because this is where my peace of mind is unfurled. I can share music news, views about society, everyday stresses that concern me just as I'm sure they are of concern to you all. So please stay tuned -- and if you have new music tht you think I should take note of -- please hit me up (soulmusiqluva@gmail.com).

One final note, if you've followed my postings I'm sure you remember me going on and on about the music of a gentleman by the name of V. V has sung background vocals for Jill Scott and has also worked with DJ Jazzy Jeff, Will Smith, Silk, Justin Timberlake, Musiq Soulchild, Anthony Hamilton, and Heather Headley. He's been in the studio working tirelessly on his second album and has been leaking songs, little by little for the followers of his Myspace blog. From what I've heard this far -- this album is going to easily be one of early 09's smokers!

Check out new music from my soulman, V ~~> (here ya go)

Each song download is a mere $.99 -- you'll blow more than that if you buy a pack of gum, a Lotto quick pick, a small order of fries -- just do it -- for the love of good music!

I'm Missing You...

I was listening to music today (what else is new :) and thought of all who I miss terribly -- take a trip down memory lane with me!

TUPAC

I really dug Tupac, on the good and bad days. I loved him as an actor - he was a character, for sure but the one memory that makes me smile is his role on the episode of A Different World as Jada Pinkett's boyfriend, Pickolo.

GERALD LEVERT

This brother, Gerald Levert just brings a chill to me now, even though he's no longer with us in the physical. Gerald performed in New York a few months before his shocking death and my sister and I were on hand to take it all in. I was so angry at her because we sat close enough for her to run to the stage to get one of the teddy bears that he was tossing into the crowd -- and this dummy was too scared!

Here, Gerald sings one of the songs made famous by my other departed boyfriend

RICK JAMES

I had this private love affair with Rick James that even he didn't know about. Lord, this was a favorite song and still is -- bless him.

MINNIE RIPPERTON

My father was in love with Minnie Ripperton and because of his love, I was exposed to her fabulous music and beauty.

PHYLLIS HYMAN
In my mind, Phyllis Hyman is a goddess and there will never be another to top her. Secretly I wanted to be Phyllis -- statuesque, smoky voiced and a diva with loads of class -- fawned after by many men.

DONNY HATHAWAY

No commentary necessary for Donny and his music. Genius -- pure genius and a brother that holds a special place in my heart filled with music!

MARVIN GAYE

Nobody rocked like Marvin - he was supposed to wait for me so we could hold hands, walk off into the sunset and live this happy life -- he didn't know it though and God had other plans for us both.

LUTHER VANDROSS

This will forever be a favorite of mine -- Gregory Hines and Luther Vandross -- whoever thought to pair them together did a marvelous deed!

Long Time Coming!

Timecheck: 1/27/09 approx 1:30am
Status: Sifting my head for thoughts & chat~laughing with CarlBoogie on FB

It's well after the bewitching hour and I need to get to bed for at least a couple of hours of sleep before heading into the "Twilight Zone" (my 9-to-5) but these past few weeks were filled with so many treasures, ranging from musical gems to historical wonders -- that I have to put this down in black and white before I let another day go by.

I will forever reflect and bring forth a hearty deep rooted smile. On Sunday, January 18th my favorite soulful band, MINT CONDITION returned to New York and I have only one regret. I am now somewhat physically challenged and cannot stand at the foot of the stage -- where I've been able to count the number of fillings a singer has up in their top row. So, I sat with my girls (Ann Marie and Pammie) and watched this sister next to me diss the essence of real music as she slept through most of the show. I guess I can say it openly now since Pam caught on last week -- Stokley is my first love, only he doesn't know it. (grin) I've seen many a musicians in my day, but there's just something funky about this brother -- maybe it's the wiggle and the glide he's perfected on stage or it could be those monster high notes he manages to unleash or it might even be the way he chews his gum or ties his scarf up under his hat (lol) -- whatever it is, the magic has had me hooked for years. The first time I met him, I kept asking the young lady I'd hung out with (Aisha) to pinch me. It was a dream that somehow materialized into a reality. And then, year before last -- I met him again. Utter delight!

Anyway, getting back to the show last week. I can't give you a play by playlist because I'm not good at that. I just know that the New Congress and Mint Condition rocked the packed house. From the new to the old to the even older, Mint Condition is a band with an eternal flame that seemingly will never fade. With songs like "Pretty Brown Eyes" "You Don't Have To Hurt No More" "Someone To Love" and "Someone To Love" -- you would have been satisfied but still yearning for the more recent gems if they'd left the stage right then and there. Fortunate for the captivated audience, there was much more to come -- in the form of "Gratitude" "Baby Boy, Baby Girl" (my son and I made the video cut! yaaay) "Nothing Left To Say" and an impromptu acoustic version of "If You Love Me" - a request from someone in the crowd.

That was Sunday, the start of a fabulous week -- fast forward to the wee hours of Tuesday morning, before the sun came up. I was on a bus with members of my church and community, headed to Washington, D.C. for the historic inauguration ceremony for our nation's first black President. The experience was unbelievable and I will always relish in the fact that I was there! I saw nothing and heard even less, but I shared that experience with my son and we enjoyed one another. We walked for miles trying to find the perfect spot to catch a glimpse of something -- anything, to no avail. We did, however come face to face with one of my all-time favorite football players, the former New York Jets running back, Curtis Martin. Curtis was walking past us when I'd called out to him and asked him if we could take a picture with him. Did I mention how cold it was in DC? How the wind felt like it was slicing a piece of skin from you every time it blew past you?! Curtis took the pictures with us and was so much more humble and gracious than I could have ever imagined.

I also saw Donnie McClurkin in passing while we were doing all of that walking. But I truly did not get to enjoy the inaugural ceremony until I returned home to watch on tv what I'd missed in person.

May God shine his richest blessings upon President Obama and his beautiful family.

Wednesday evening -- up in Harlem, ONUTSS kicked off the 2009 season with two exceptionally gifted singers, Tim Dillinger and Monica Blaire. It was an explosive and moving night of performances. I always feel a sense of pride when artists come out to be part of what Pam and I have built. It's a tremendous honor and an overwhelming sense of pride takes me on as they get on stage and show the crowd just why they're there and let them know that their names are not to be forgotten. That night was one such night. Massive shout out and love to both Tim and Monica.

Friday evening -- down in the Village at Joe's Pub, Fiona Bloom put an event together that not only brought the spectacular soulful talent of Monica Blaire and Kameron Corvet, but the guests in the audience were amongst the underground soul movement's 'who's who' (names I won't list, but it was something) ! I'd heard about Kameron but hadn't been able to see him perform live until that evening and what an awakening I received! Kameron was just a man with his guitar -- but he made you feel as though he was performing a private event where just you and he were in the room. Wonderful! Nothing more needs to be said about Monica Blaire. She simply is...the truth and nothing but!

There was one other artist on the bill at Joe's Pub, Postman. I really didn't dig his music -- it wasn't for me. I felt bad for him because it appeared that I was not the only person to feel that way. His hip hop/song style was an awkward addition to the lineup. Overall I had a wonderful time and I hope the Bloom Effect will take heed of the reaction from the crowd and make an attempt to bring these two artists together again.
